Just a quick note to compare and contast two different Virtual Computer tehnologies

VMWare, One free package which will support many OS in a host machine, regardless of host OS
Microsoft, Virtual PC or Server, which depends on the Host OS NOT the Guest !
{EDIT} they will both run on any Os, the difference seems to be if you wnt it to run in th ebackground or forground, in the forgrond it has seemless access to the console, in te background it has a crap web based thingy.

VMWare Server (FREE) allow you to MAP USB ports
Microsoft Virtual PC, does not, or at least i cont find out how

VMware has a simple P2V (physical to Virtual) toolset
Microsoft seem to want to mak it difficult to download their P2v suite

My Friday lunch time as set to become a lunch I would not forget

Arrived back at my desk, usual CTRL-ALT-DEL to unlock my laptop, enter password, BSOD !???? BUGGER
Reboot, “a disk read error has occured, Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart” BUGGER, BUGGER, BUGGER
call helpdesk and arrange new disk, should be all sorted in a few days

Then comes that realisation moment,??I have just archived 3 week of email to PST and not yet done a backup, FUCK FUCK BUGGER BOLLOCKS

Pack up and head home, here is have a maplin USB / IDE interface, so connect up and see what i get
XP sees the disk 🙂
but cant see any partitions 🙁

Then along comes Stellar Phoenix partition recovery tools, What a fantastic bit of kit, it??will do a full disk scan and recover almost anything, with repeated retrys for duff data. They even have a demo version which allows you to??see if the tool will??get your data or not.

To cut??a long story short,?? 90 Euros and 4 hours Later,??I have ALL of my data

Now??I just have to wait for the kind helpdesk monkey to come and replace the drive and re image!!!!

Oh and then re install al the non standard apps??I need ……??

Had a call from my dad this morning, “my computer is tits up, switched it on this morning and it went BANG !”

He is an electrical heating engineer, so is no stranger to pulling electrical stuff apart, and replacing a few bit and bobs

Told him where to buy a NEW PSU (not PCWorld, glouester has a little shop with Good prices for such things)
90 minutes later, he calls back to say ??18 quid later his computer is now working again !!!

Horray !!!!!!!!!!!

Due to some lack of forsight and planning on my behalf, this blog site was not configured correctly as a subdomain of species5618.net??on my web server

After some backups and some very carefull deletetion and recreation of the domain on the web server, all is now correct, and yet more amazing still working !!

Some FUC*&%$# \/\/ankers are spoofing my domain to send spam, AAAARRRGGGHH

As I run some fairly heavey and successful anti spam measures for my domain I run catch all, really useful for the web forms where you need and email address but don’t want to use the main one !

however over the past few days it has been filling up with bounced spam, ie stuff which is rejected and returned to its “apparent” sender

so much for sender policy framework 🙁
