Smoking Ban

Following on from my previsous comments on this subject

Dont get me wrong, I think the smoking ban is a great idea, but like most things this government does, it is a? poorly implimented, Draconian approach. I think there is room for a small number of “licenced” venues which allow smoking. By licenced I do not mean a PUB, but a Smoking licence.? A local council could then control the number of venues to a agreed percentage. ?

Well? I have been running my supercharged sky plus box for almost two weeks now without a hitch. During which time? she who must be obayed, and the one who originally said 20 hours is more than enough, has been quite happy to record LOTS of stuff. Add to that all my Sci Fi stuff and we are already at just over 21 hours of recorded material, more than the original box would take, and? the system is still showing 87% free, so by my reckoning that is closer to 150 hours than 137….

YEEeee? HAAaaaaaa !!!!

Skype V SIP (cont)

For any one how has read my first Skype V SIP? rant.
According to an article on lightreading.com, it would seem that eBay, who aquired Skype for $2.6 Billion late 2005, have differeant ideas and may start looking at interoperability,

I have just spotted this article on the ban on smoking vote which on the surface seems like a? excellent plan, but what most people seem to have missed is the income the Government get from TAX on Cigerettes will probably drop significantly and need to be? replaced. Which will result in increased TAX somewhere else.

Where is all the money for the NHS to deal smoking related illness going to come from?

Dont get me wrong? I am not pro smoking, in fact? I have never smoked
but such a sweeping decision will only come back an bite us? ALL in pocket

Over recent months i have been suffering a small dilemma, Lots of NEW TV series starting and not enough SKY+ time to keep up.
24, Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, Lost, CSI LV, CSI NY, Invasion, Threshold, Battlestar Gallactica to name a few. So I set about looking at upgrade the SKY+ box from the paltry 20 hours to something a bit more useful. Remembering the Google is my friend, I found lots of places selling kits and lots of forums discussing the matter.
As you would expect it is not a simple mater of out with the old and in with the new, different boxes have different hardware features, and different firmware will support different max disk sizes.
According to most places my V1 Pace box would only take a 160G disk but the V2 would take a 250G but not a 300G, then the disk must spin up and be fully ready in under 8 seconds (apparently). There was also lost of chatter about Maxtor disks being the most suitable.?
HMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmm, I have a 300G Maxtor in a USB2 chassis is built, got to be worth a try, not outlay, so no loss???..
MORE research required.
Bingo, another forum, says use maxblast software from Maxtor to tweak the LBA value of the HD, and even suggested 274G was the MAX a SKY+ would support, got to be worth a shot.
Add ??3.99 for a set of security TORX driver from maplin, and Bob???s your aunty???s lover. One HD reporting to be 274G (250G in Real Computer Gigibaytes) installed in my SKY+ box,
Now for a Full RESET,
Services, 4,01,select, Full reset, select, confirm, and get a coffee as it is suppose to take 45 minutes on disk this big!!!

5 minutes later the BOX rebooted, my heart sank ???..
Wait for it to start up and check the menu,
SKY+ menu said 100% free, so it seems to be OK

Lets try and record some stuff, So I set it to record two programs at the same time (3 hours worth in total) and went out

Now it is crunch time,
First has it recorded both programs ??? ? ? YES !!!!
Second how much space did it use??? ? ? ? ? 2%.

YEEEE HAA, I have a working 137Hr Sky plus box

Species5618 goes LAMP

After Many months of using windows (IIS) based blogware and never really being happy with the look and feel I thought it was time to look at alternatives.? A few of my friends and collegues rave about open source and LAMP? and having just built my first LAMP Wiki, HTTP://how-to-build-an-intranet.com, I thought? i would look at LAMP blogware

The Piglet blog uses wordpress, so i figured that would be a good place to start.
So i downloaded it, read the install docs, and here we are. This blog is now running on a Debian based LAMP platform

What more can i say !!!!!!!!!!!

Skype V SIP

Why is it Skype is the most well know internet VOIP outfit, when their propriarty protocols and technology mean it will not interwork with the 100’s of SIP complient provider around the world, When SIP, and IAX for that matter, is capable of providing FREE calls between different vendors, technophobe friendly integration with an PSTN device

Some SIP Vendors
SIPGATE

Gossiptel
Free World Dial up
Earthlink

VoipTalk
Gradwell

Sky by Broadband is stealing your bandwidth

Having registered my interest in SKY by broadband on the sky.com site I was dispointed to find out it had gone live on the BBC and not by en email from sky. So just installed Sky by Broadband, after having to down load the client at work becasue it refused to download from home.
That is hickup No.2
Two microsoft downloads and a SKY client update Later i am up and running, ISH…..
I had a nose around my system, to see what was going on and where the data was coming from, only to discover several TCP connections to Random broadband address’s in the UK my first thought was i had a virus, further investigation showed the culprit to be something called KSERVICE.EXE, which appear to be a P2P program used by SKY, over which i now have no control
After a bit of googleing I found this article which only goes to confirm my concerns What a complete pile of CRAP, not only do SKY have a legal monopoly on the delivery of a decent channel line up to my house, but now they are “stealing” my bandwidth and computer resources. That SUCKS !!
