The girlfriend has been badgering me about doing a proper web site for her after the wedding count down expires. however she can’t be bothered with layout, html, css etc, so I figured I need a CMS (Content management system) !
Hmmmm, main site is windows, windows CMS systems are either expensive or crap. So I looked at LAMP based CMS, afterall this blog and my wiki project is LAMP.

download, untar, unzip, setup virtual site in apache2, run install, WOW it worked first time !!!!

Basically the story is this,
Jim said to his girlfriend that any stupid website could get tons of hits, simply because people are bored all the time. She said that He was an idiot and couldn???t make a website that could get tons of hits if he wanted to. After a long argument (mostly centered around the fact that she called him an idiot) they made a bet:
If he could not make a website to get 2,000,000 hits, he would agree that I was an idiot; however, if he could make a website to get 2,000,000 hits, she would have a menage a trois (that’s a threesome to you non french-speakers) with him and another girl. he thought she was kidding at the time, but then she said she was so sure of herself, that she would even put it in writing.

Let me start at the begining,
As i own my own domain, like many IT literate people these days, I make up email address’s as I go along, depending on what I need it for, homeshopping@, mobile@, cars@ etc, I am sure you get the picture, I then run a catch all system (with some fairly heavy spam blocking, not filtering, outright blocking)
So a few days ago I get an email from a place called licenceguard to an address I used to get car insurance qoutes, insure@ as it happens
Offering me insurance against losing my driving licence, that would pay out up to ??15,000 per year for taxis etc, if I lose my driving licence, all for a ??125 premium !!!!!!!!!!
So if i get this right, some car insurance outfit sold my email address on to licenceguard, who then offer to cover my travelling expenses if I lose my licence, by say, repeatedly driving with no car insurence, becasue licenseguard was cheaper, get my drift !!!
Not someting I would do personly , but I am sure there are many that might, or even wor,se drink drive, knowing they would still be able to get to work, if they got caught and lost their licence !!!!
I have not yet got round to moving the debian server to my data centre (Ex garage) where it would benefit from a 3KVA UPS, so during the recent power cut which struck Gloucestershire, the box went off the air !!
It came straight back, according to the attached monitor, so it did not pay much attention,
However some 24 hours later, while trying to access it from the office, I noticed it was still off the air !!
Further investigation showed I had made a slight cock up in my DHCP config, and it had come back on the wrong internal IP address. I have now corrected this and all is well again !
Embarrasing really conciduring what i do for a living !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Over 19000 hits in under 3 days all to the root of the site (the blog is NOT the default site for this IP address)
The default site for this IP address is NOT affected !
Lots of hits from various IPs belonging to globecorp.net, who seem to be a adult hosting outfit !!!
With LOTS of hits from referrers which look like adult , advert or spam ring sites, like 123clickcash.com and e-pirates.net
all of which have no content as of this morning
And have current NS servers with names like PLEASEDROPYTHISHOSTxxxx.yyyyy? where yyyyy is a different in most cases

While this is not quite as glamorous as Brighton beach, I am currently sat in Go Bananas, using my XDA Mini S to write this blog. Go Bananas is a superb, whacky warehouse style, kids fun house with loads of stuff for kids, and reasonable coffee too….

Having just read the piglet power down blog? and just recieved an extortionate power bill, I thought i would attack the problem scientifically
I too have a lot of kit, ignoring the details , at least 4 machines running 24*7 + peripherals and interconnect. So i have embarked on a dangerous (do not do this yourself) yet scienticfic voyage to assertain the power consumption of my kit
? So starting with with my Debian box (old Dell piii 800 optimax, NO monitor / keyboard etc),
Shut the box down, take the top of the plug, remove the fuse, connect Digital Multimeter across the fuse holder, (now for the dangerous bit) power back up
and i was surprise at how little current the box consumes
200mA at 240V during boot up
150mA at 240V once fully booted
now for the maths
using the running figiure of 150mA at 240V that is 36 Watts
Electricity is priced per Kilo watt hour, so 1000 / 36 = 27.777 hr run time on 1 KWh
with a teir2 KWh costing 6.660p (INC VAT) that makes 5.66p per day
assuming 90 days a quarter, that is ??5.10 per qtr for my debian
Allowing approx ??350 quid to build a Mini ITX box, that what reduce the power by about 50%, I calculate the payback time is 35 years,
DOH !!!!
and then add the grief of trying to sneak all the new hardware in past the missus !
